When a device is manufactured to a given NEMA standard, it provides a clear, unbiased picture of its capabilities and potential applications.
Common NEMA Ratings for Industrial Computers
NEMA 1
NEMA 1 rated computers and monitors are constructed for indoor use to provide a degree of protection against dust, ingress of solid foreign objects (i.e. falling dirt), light, and indirect splashing but is not dust-tight; primarily prevents contact with live parts.
NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X
NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X rated computers and monitors have very similar protections against the elements. They are constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provides protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (i.e. windblown dust); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (i.e. rain, sleet, snow, splashing water, and hose directed water); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
NEMA 4X rating goes one step above in terms of durability. NEMA 4X rated computers provide an additional level of protection against corrosion.
